What count Aida should I use?
14-count is the most popular. Beginners should start with 14ct or 11ct (larger holes, easier to see). Use higher counts (18ct, 22ct) for more detail in a smaller finished size.
How much extra fabric do I need around my design?
Add at least 3 inches (7.5cm) on each side for framing. This calculator adds a margin automatically.
What is the difference between DMC and Anchor thread?
They are different brands of embroidery floss with different numbering systems. The colors are very similar but not identical. Use the Thread Converter tab to find equivalents.
How many skeins of floss do I need?
It depends on your pattern's stitch count and how many colors you use. One skein of DMC (8m ≈ 315 inches) covers roughly 390–400 full cross stitches on 14ct Aida. Use the Thread Quantity tab for an estimate.
What does "over 2" mean in cross stitch?
On evenweave fabric, you stitch over 2 threads instead of 1. This means 28ct evenweave stitched over 2 equals the same size as 14ct Aida.
