How do I calculate ABV from gravity readings?
Take a gravity reading before fermentation (OG) and after (FG). The formula is (OG − FG) × 131.25. This calculator does it for you.
What is Original Gravity (OG)?
The gravity of your wort/must before adding yeast. It measures how much sugar is dissolved in the liquid. Higher OG = more potential alcohol.
What is Final Gravity (FG)?
The gravity after fermentation is complete. Yeast converts sugar to alcohol, so gravity drops. When it stops dropping, fermentation is done.
Do I need to correct my hydrometer reading for temperature?
Yes. Hydrometers are calibrated to a specific temperature (usually 60°F/15.5°C). If your sample is warmer or cooler, use the Temp Correction tab.
How much priming sugar do I need for bottling?
It depends on your batch size, beer temperature, and desired carbonation level. The Priming Sugar tab calculates the exact amount.
